Washington and Lee Vs. Stevenson University Highlights

The Generals are off to a strong start this fall and are currently 3-1. We opened the season in Bethany, WV for the "Fuzzy" Williams Memorial Soccer Tournament. We went 2-0 on the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Moravian College on Friday and returned again to Hoag Field the very next day to defeat tourney host Bethany College 4-2. Also competing in the tournament was Stevenson University, who also finished the weekend 2-0. This set up a highly contested match between the Generals and the Mustangs of Stevenson University. We were able to pull out an overtime victory in the waning seconds of the first OT (highlights below).

The second match this past weekend was another overtime thriller against #21 Dickinson College. The Generals fell 1-0 in a very physical contest. The Generals now have the rest of the week to recover as we get into ODAC play away against Guilford College on the 15th of September. The coaching staff and players would like to thank all the families who helped put on the post-game tailgates on both Saturday and Sunday.

Generals 2012

The Generals Soccer blog is back in full swing for the 2012 season. We hope to continue to bring you more game highlights, pictures and behind the scenes action from all the players and staff of Washington and Lee Men's Soccer.

We have just recently wrapped up another successful pre-season and we are currently involved in our second year of extended pre-season camp. 37 candidates reported to camp and final team selection includes 29 players from 15 different states and 2 foreign countries (Germany and Argentina). In previous years we have had to cram lots of soccer and fitness into a relatively short period of time, which limited the amount of team building activities that we were able to do. This years the team was able to participate in a variety of activities including Frisbee Golf Tournament, Bikram Yoga (Hot Yoga), Washington and Lee's Ropes Course directed by James Dick, St. Mary's Wilderness Hike and the player's favorite "Boot Camp" by Ray's Body Shop. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Effie Wallace and her crew who provided us with the best food possible. They were super efficient, generous and catered almost every meal for us just outside our locker room.

Frisbee Golf on W&L's very own 18 hole course.
Two of our strongest helping Collier Wiseman up and over the wall.
Completely exhausted after an 1hr long Bikram Yoga session. A special thanks to our Faculty Mentor Eddie Velasquez for organizing the event at the studio which he attends in Charlottesville, VA.
Ray Cohen of Ray's Body Shop doing some fabrication.
Team Hike to St. Mary's with the newest member of our coaching staff, Brian Buckmire.

On the field training has been has challenging and demanding but the team has reported to camp more fit than recent years. As always, we have had some set backs to injury, but with a large amount of quality depth on the team we were able to press forward without losing too much momentum. The biggest disappointment of this years pre-season was the lack of a scrimmage against another college opponent as we had our cancelled a week before team camp. The team responded well with an inter squad scrimmage a week before our opening weekend in Bethany, WV.

As we move forward into the regular season we have a sense that we can accomplish most of goals this year. We have a strong 7 man senior class to lead the way and many underclassman who are looking to contribute and "Buy In" to make a run at the ODAC Championship.

We hope to continue to keep you up to date with the most current information as we know most parents won't be able to make all of our games. We have also created a Twitter account to provide the last goals and results. Check us out on twitter @wandlsoccer
